A message from the superintendent

Superintendent Dr. William (Bill) Heiser

Dr. William Heiser, Superintendent

Team BCPS--

I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to return to Team BCPS and serve this exceptional community. I am inspired by the talent, resilience, and unwavering belief of our students and staff.  I will work diligently with the Board of Education to ensure that our system works every day to serve, support, and motivate all members of Team BCPS . Our core purpose centers on increasing achievement for all students and providing multiple pathways to prepare students for college, careers, and life.

Every decision we make will begin and end with this critical question: What is best for students? Our work will be grounded in this clear and unwavering commitment to putting students first and building a culture where excellence is nurtured and expected every day. BCPS has made meaningful progress over the past few years, and I see immense potential in this system. I am excited for this next chapter in the BCPS story, and I look forward to working alongside this community on behalf of our 108,000 students.

Sincerely,
Dr. William (Bill) Heiser
Superintendent

Community Engagement Opportunities

Dr. Bill Heiser's community engagement plan will include a variety of opportunities to engage with stakeholders across Team BCPS in conversations to shape the future of BCPS. Dr. Heiser believes that if we authentically engage and collaborate with ALL stakeholders, then trust, shared accountability, and confidence in BCPS will increase and student outcomes will improve. Stakeholders will have multiple opportunities throughout the school year to connect with system leadership and provide direct feedback on system efforts.

Transition Team

Superintendent Dr. Heiser announced the members of his transition team on August 6. The 36-member team includes business and community partners; current and retired BCPS educators, staff, and administrators; representatives of Baltimore-area colleges and universities; and employee association leaders. The transition team members bring wide-ranging experience across K-12 and higher education and public and private sectors.

The transition team will meet from August 20 through October 30 and will assist Dr. Heiser in assessing the school system’s current state of academics, operations, and culture/climate. The team is charged with developing short-term and long-term recommendations related to academic excellence, operational readiness and financial sustainability, talent identification, and community engagement. The transition team will produce a report on their findings and strategic recommendations, and this report will be shared with the Team BCPS community in November.
