Speech Language Pathologists work with children in the public school setting who have significant communication problems that affect their success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy, and learning. Communication disorders include: fluency, voice, articulation, language, and hearing impairment. Students are identified for service by a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) through the IEP team process.

School-based SLP services are provided only when identified speech-language impairment directly impacts educational performance and requires the specialized expertise of a speech-language pathologist. Speech Language Pathologists collaborate with teachers and families, and consult with school personnel in order to support student communication skills in the classroom.

Services by Speech Language Pathologists are also available for students, birth until three years of age, through the Baltimore County Infants and Toddlers Program.

Every Baltimore County Public School is assigned a full or part time Speech Language Pathologist based on individual school need. Speech and language services are available on a continuum of service delivery models, which include: consultation, classroom collaboration and/or therapy, and small group and individual therapy. Students generally receive services outlined on their IEP in small groups or within the classroom setting. Identified students in the Infants and Toddlers Program receive services as outlined on the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) in the natural environment.
