October 30, 2023 Staff and Community Update:   2023-2024 School Year Calendar Adjustments – Half-Day Asynchronous Learning Planned for Dec. 22 and May 17

Dear Team BCPS staff and families,

We are writing to inform you of two adjustments to the 2023-2024 school year calendar. Schools and offices are scheduled to close three hours early on December 22, 2023, and May 17, 2024. During these two early release days, students will engage in asynchronous learning (virtual, self-paced at home) while teachers and staff engage in planning and professional development.  Students will not report to school buildings on Dec. 22 and May 17. Learning will take place at home on a half-day schedule.

On asynchronous learning days, students complete activities/lessons on their own at home as part of independent work. Examples may include but are not limited to pre-recorded video lessons, resource videos, assigned readings, and posted assignments. These lessons and activities will be created centrally by the Division of Curriculum Instruction and posted online for students and families. BCPS teachers and staff will engage in planning and professional development on Dec. 22 and May 17. We will share additional information on how to access these centrally developed lessons as we get closer to those dates. We wanted to make you aware of these adjustments now, so staff and families have ample time to plan for the change.
